Who Is That?
I pulled up to New Mission High to watch Ja’Kyera Baccus (#20, Center) in action. I first met them at Hoops Collaborative Basketball Clinics, where they earned the Most Improved Player of the Game award.

Ja’Kyera was a force on the court it’s been a while since I’ve seen a center truly control the paint. While some bigs shy away from crashing the boards or handling the rock in transition, Ja’Kyera plays with confidence. She attacks the glass, isn’t afraid to push the tempo, and has the versatility to impact the game at multiple positions. She dropped 26 points!
I had never heard of Ursuline Academy until I walked into the gym. In my head, I’m thinking, “Good God, how many schools are in Massachusetts?” But they came to play, executing well on both ends of the floor and securing a 12-point win over New Mission.
I caught up with their coach, who said this performance was a huge step up from their last matchup. Looks like they’ve been putting in the work and making the right adjustments!
Overall New Mission dominated the boards with 47 rebounds, towering over Ursuline Academy in that category. Defensively, they racked up 5 steals and 4 blocks, showing their presence in the paint. However, free throws were a struggle, as they converted only 50% from the line.
What I didn’t know is that I was at New Mission’s game celebrating being the 2025 South Conference Champions. I always end up at an event but I was glad to be in attendance because the spirits were good all around.
