Catching up with Massasoit

I pulled up on Massasoit to see them play RCC (I know, I’m trash). I haven’t been able to get out to Brockton, so it was convenient to catch both teams I like right here in the city. I had a chance to catch up with Massasoit’s coach, who told me he used to coach RCC’s women’s team. He pointed out his accomplishments, including banners from his former players hanging in the gym.

When I originally walked into the gym, the score was… well, let’s just say RCC has a lot of work to do on offense. They need to improve their strength and conditioning because a team with speed will out run them.

I like both teams, but as a former player and a fan, I know how tough it is when a team eases up just because they’re winning. You still want to execute plays without coming off as an “a—.”

As people from the track meet next door wandered into the gym, every single one of them had the same reaction: a collective “Yikes.” The final score was 15-85.

But despite the score, RCC’s #33 spirit was unmatched. They were literally singing while bringing the ball down the court and they could actually sing.

The bleachers were filled with RCC students, fans, and family members cheering them on no matter what. That kind of support stands out, especially in tough moments.

If you read my article on Brockton vs. Randolph High, you know the littlest players have a special place in my heart. RCC’s #0? Other teams should call them “Stay On Them.” Give them the ball, and they’re taking your center to the rim. No hesitation.

Reflecting on my own coaching days, I remember my first middle school team. We won just one game while I was coaching. For nearly all my players, it was their first time playing organized ball. That first win was everything it showed them what they were capable of. I hope RCC finds that same spark because they have talented players. I believe they’ll get back on track.
